Grinding, heirlooms & a Dwarf

April 20, 2010

I was in a grinding mood yesterday.

*waits for your minds to get out of the gutter*

No, not that sort of grinding.  *glares at the Night Elves dancing on mailboxes* The sort of mindless repetitive behavior that is necessitated when one desires to buy heirlooms for a new character.  I had gotten an idea in my head earlier in the day about a Dwarf warrior who was also a jewelcrafter (diamond in the rough?  Geddit?) and decided that she must be so.

However, now that I’ve gotten spoiled to the Heirloom Way of leveling, I needed to have heirlooms.  All of them.  I had the plate shoulders laying around from an earlier pally alt, but the breastplate, axe, gun and trinket still needed to be purchased.  So, I embarked upon a Day of PuGs that was (somehow) less painful than my earlier efforts to kit out my hunter.  Not sure why.

One observation that I’ve made in an overtly vague way became clear to me, however.  Two classes that make me groan inwardly when I see they’re in my party are rogues and warlocks.  They, as a class, tend to be the most reckless and rude (thoughtless?) of all the classes.  However, I did decide that when I must choose between the two, I’ll choose the rogue.  They may be careless and foolhardy and not seldom suicidal, but at least they have some smidgen of respect for my mana pool.  The warlocks, however, Life Tap away with no regard for me or my subtle hints to eat or drink to solve their mana problem.  They stand around arrogantly with about a quarter of their entire health bar (or less!), looking down their noses at me.  “Your mana?  I’m entitled to it – you’re the healer.  I spit on you and your ‘common courtesies’.”

But I digress.

At any rate, I was very surprised how easy it was to settle in and earn about 150 emblems to buy all the heirlooms.  Just like when I was working on rep with the Purple Cat Guys and the title for the baby druid, it was just a matter of having something good on TV to keep my brain occupied while I filled up the little boxes on my screen.  I hope this bodes well for farming enough ore to level my warrior’s jewelcrafting fast enough to make useful things.

I’ll be leveling this warrior as Arms – I had such a great time last time leveling Arms, I’m doing it again!  Using Pix’s guide, of course.  I have high hopes for her.  *visions of jewelcrafting Dwarves*

One of the luxuries of actually playing on your home server rather than scattering your alts all over the server list?  Vanity guild bank space.  Delicious, spacious bank space.

I think levelling Arms is a great idea – I swear by it! In fact I levelled my warrior as Arms all the way. A friend convinced me to try Fury at some point in Hellfire and I did.. only to promptly go back to Arms. (Fury is great fun at level 80 when you have the hit rating and gear.. not so much while levelling I find personally).Heirlooms make you really spoilt when levelling – and I have to admit I don’t think I could level a character without it now that I’ve gotten used to having the extra 20%! I also can’t find myself levelling on another realm than where I have most of my chars. I’m too used to having my gold available to buy myself upgrades and mounts, and all my tradeskills to make myself stuff if I want it. Maybe I’m spoilt – but the game is more fun to me when I can grab some stuff and see my character grow not only in levels but getting some new, fun stuff too!The only thing I want to complain about is your assession of warlocks! I was a warlock for nearly all of TBC and up until ToC days in WotLK and warlocks aren’t that bad! Ok wait.. Actually.. good warlocks aren’t that bad. We’re evil – but we’re not stupid. However, some lesser warlock (like.. all but me!.. or well.. okay, maybe some other than me) may be stupid enough to life tap more than they should. Personally – I don’t like dying – so I life tap in my rotation so as to always get healed back up by simply splash healing or a HoT. Anything else would be stupid. But then I think that’s the quintessence of the whole issue – some players are stupid. They could play any class and they’d still die :P In short… I’m awesome! I mean.. eh.. warlocks are awesome :P

I’ve been leveling my warrior as prot, and I love it! She’s going up the levels so quickly – 65 and rising. Go you with the grinding! I just can’t bring myself to do it for long at all. Though I have started going around all of Azeroth to get my exploration achievements… XD

That’s some dedication to put in for heirlooms! I haven’t ever been able to bring myself to get more than the shoulders and chest and an occasional weapon. It occurs to me now that I probably have enough badges scattered about to just go ahead and round everyone out (and it would be nice to not have to swap gear between my warrior and DK all the time), but I’ll probably forget all about it by the time I get home.I am amazed, by the way, at people who will level more than one warrior. I’m never doing it again. At least, not alone. I’ll demand a healing partner.

I had a sneak preview of her! I like her. Diamond in the rough, I see what you did thar. :D

I’m working on a Pix-inspired Arms warrior right now myself, also toting the BoA’s of doom. Using that gear you’re able to start AoE grinding on a warrior at level 8. Combine Thunderclap with Victory Rush and the occasional Heroic Strike and everything dies in seconds. It’s like a domino effect; if one of them falls VR procs and then every other one goes a tumblin’ down after.Warlocks may be an excellent class to play, but my healer despises whorelocks that simply expect me to keep them up all the time. If the tank’s rocking along just fine and having no problems then I encourage Warlocks to use Life Tap so that I have something to do and we get a faster run from higher DPS, but if I have other people I have to worry about or I’m having mana issues, then you can handle your own freaking HP/MP. Warlocks have all the tools they need to keep both their health and their mana maxed at any given time. They have Life Tap and they have Drain Life, if they didn’t level First Aid that’s their own fault. If they aren’t an herbalist, not my problem. There’s a difference between a Warlock and a whorelock.

I didn’t see the comma, rendering the title of this "grinding heirlooms and a dwarf." I was about to ask if you had consent from the dwarf ;)

@Saga: Long comments are never a bad thing! And I agree, the extra gold on a home server is super nice too… I’m trying to tell myself that I will only buy mats for her jewelcrafting if I just can’t manage to get it on my own, since buying mats for level a profession to "save time" rather than grinding is such a slippery slope. One minute you’re buying mats, the next it’s an hour later and you’re about bankrupt. D:@Softi: I’m glad you has success leveling Prot! I hear it’s easier now, but back when I tried it, it SO didn’t work for me, haha. I’m too scared to try (and fail) again.@Alas: I’m actually surprised that I was so lazy initially with my pally that I only bought her the shoulders. When Lus and I rolled the alts, the chest wasn’t available yet, but we never earned the emblems to buy the chest when it DID come out – I guess we didn’t appreciate the extra 10%! And re: healing partner… I secretly wish I had one. Going into PuGs alone is scary sometimes and misery loves company, right? ;) I need to make buddies with a healer.@Psynister: Yes! I trotted over to Loch Modan and started the early trogg killing quests. Of course the first trogg I charge decides to call over his buddies and I mowed them all down with ease. It’s the first time I’ve NOT been in fear for my life whilst being mobbed by troggs.

Speaking as someone with a warlock, we’re caught in a cleft stick here. for every Anea who complains about us lifetapping and doing nothing there’s another healer who complains when we sit down to eat or first aid after life tabbing that we’re stealing their job. :-(

I used to complain (while on my resto druid) about lifetapping warlocks stealing my mana until my son (who plays a warlock) explained it to me this way: "C’mon, Dad, it’s not like you’re using the mana."lol. Ah kids.@SoftiYes! I levelled a warrior prot until mid-60s before I got tired of playing Horde (though I have to admit, Hinterland Horde side is sooo much more fun than Alliance) and it is a very fun spec. At least, once you figure out how to pull large groups quickly and simultaneously. Survival is no problemo, you are invincible! And as long as you can make the big pulls, grinding goes as quickly as any dps class. What really made it click for me was Warbringer. I just started a new warrior too, to tank with, and am levelling fury ’cause dual wielding is cool, right? And until SM-cathedral/Zul’Farrak-ish it really doesn’t matter what spec you tank in. It’s sufficient to strap on a shield and spam Thunderclap. But the plan is to dual spec as soon as I hit 40. Spend most of my time in prot from then on out, I imagine, but still whip out the second sword whenever I think it would be fun.
