A Very Anea UI

February 13, 2009

Thanks to several people that requested a more in-depth UI post, I will give you a closer look at what WoW looks like through my UI.

Way back before 1680×1050 became a more popular screen size, I stumbled upon Discern and went /squee in delight, because someone had actually made a clean UI for the resolution I was using(!) and I used it off and on; I had forays into other UIs but always came back to this one, over a year after it broke and was no longer updated.  I’ve had to tweak things here and there, substitute addons in when others broke and made it my own, but the original Discern look is still very much there.

First are a few unsullied screenshots, then we’ll get down and dirty.  (For those of you that want a full, unadulterated list of addons only, click here.)  Click to embiggen any of the screenshots.

This is what I usually see – clean screen, with CowTip over there in the bottom right corner.

Resting

A Pitbull configuration shot, to show all unit frames and positioning.

Unit Frames

At the Sarth raid you read about in the last post.

Raid

Color by number:

explainraidsmall

  1. MapSqueenix
Simple and square.  I don’t need anything fancy.   I need to see where I am, where I’m going, and where the flowers are.
  2. Raid FramesPitbull
    See no. 5
  3. ChatPrat
Chat frame enhancement.  You can also see a few instances in the chat logs of a new addon I only downloaded a few days ago to try out, ChatIcons.  As the name implies, it will put a little bitty icon of an item, spell or achievement in chat – there are also options to show an icon next to a player denoting their class.
  4. Combat TextMik’s Scrolling Battle Text
Simple, configurable combat text.   I don’t think that many people use Mik’s, but I found this in an addon pack way back when, on my rogue and have stuck with it since.
  5. Unit FramesPitbull
Everyone’s heard of Pitbull, right?  It’s so darn famous, I don’t know what I could say about it to recommend it more.   I choose it ’cause it can be made plain and simple.   (Geez, I keep saying simple. How boring and vanilla, right?)
  6. BarsBartender4
Extremely customizable combat bar addon.  Even though you can only see two bars, I am utilizing several full bars with keybinds.
  7. zomghaelmenaoHealbot
This is where the magic happens.   My one-stop-shop for healing.   Simplifies healing, decursing and provides raid frames, all with the ease of key/click binds.   Ignore this part of the screenshot if you’re not a healer.  You can instead focus on the raidframes I’ve so kindly showed you on the left.
  8. BuffsElkBuffBars
Buffs, debuffs and weapon enhancements – set up so I can see the icon and the text at a glance.   I like to have the text showing so I can read at a glance exactly what it is that’s affecting me, instead of having to mouse over. (I can’t have all the icons memorized, you know!)
  9. OmenOmen
I would have put “threat meter” but Omen is Omen is Omen.  Tracks your threat – lets you choose your warning noise!  I have the regular thunderclap, Lus just changed his to “You. Will. DIE.”

Stuff you can’t see but I couldn’t live without:

  • Auctioneer – helping me shop smart since… whenever I started using it.
  • Auditor – cash auditing fun!
  • Automaton – does a whole bunch of little helpful things that are otherwise an annoyance, such as auto-dismount/flight/stand & group/summon options.   And the thing I love it for most: it will auto-decline all duel challenges.  And not slowly, either – that flag barely hits the ground, then bounces right back up as it’s declined.  The other player is usually so confused they’ll challenge you again and again until they get the hint.  I find this extremely gratifying.  Automaton also has options for auto-selling grays and auto-repairing at vendors, which is why I originally downloaded this addon, but I now assign those jobs to Auditor, to avoid double notifications in chat.
  • Baggins – I couldn’t function without this addon.   Endless categories for the super-OCD in all of us.  My post about what’s in my bags (and consequently, a little bit about Baggins) here.
  • Cartographer – there are so many ways to utilize Cartographer that I don’t use, but there are lots.  I particularly like how you can hover over an area and it tells you the name, recommended levels to quest, the instances in the zone and fishing skill level. Nifty!
  • Eepanels – working behind the scenes is eepanels.  I opted for the “barely there” look, giving my Bartender bars something to sit on, but just outlining them so that they are more aesthetically pleasing and don’t take up tons of space.  (Thank you, Grimtorn!)
  • FuBar – FuBar is hiding stealthily at the very bottom of all these scre
enshots, only to show up when I mouseover.   On my FuBar I have AuditorFu, DurabilityFu, ExperienceFu, GarbageFu, MicroMenuFu & MiniPerfsFu.  I find that FuBar is an extremely personal bar so I will leave you to peruse the myriad of FuBar choices out there (and there are millions, let me assure you).
  • LightHeaded & DoubleWide – LightHeaded – it’s the power of Wowhead, baby!  DoubleWide makes my questlog bigger and easier to navigate.  ’cause itsy bitsy quest log windows make my head asplode.
  • SpamMeNot – to quote: “SpamMeNot intelligently detects, blocks and reports commercial and annoying spam messages before you even see them, without relying on an extensive list of blacklisted domain names.”  Doesn’t get any better than that.

I have not covered every single addon that I use, but these are the major players in my UI – the mods left out are not essential to the look and function of the UI and only to my personal playing experience.  If you have any questions about what you see, please feel free to ask!

So clean and shiny…Do you use anything to outline your bartender bars?

Wow, absolutely fantastic UI. Much better than my “I’ll put that here for now and never clean it up” approach.

I have this desire to change my Omen sound to C’thun’s “Your heart… will explode…” whisper.

I’ve been wanting to overhaul my UI and start from fresh. Currently I’ve got a bunch like <a href="http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/move-anything.aspx“ rel=”nofollow”>MoveAnything — all ad hoc and I think their getting buggy.I love your UI and I think I’ll take a few hours this weekend to do an add-on wipe (except auctioneer of course) and start from scratch. Thanks for the UI suggestions!<a href="http://imtankingwhat.wordpress.com“ rel=”nofollow”>TGAPGeorge

Your UI is delicious! I’m so pleased to see another player without 2039482394 bars and crap obscuring every inch of the screen. I run with a minimal UI myself, and I love to see other players that can enjoy the beauty of having next to nothing on the screen. :D

Can you import your own sound files for Omen? I’m just wondering if the “You. Will. DIE” is actually a cool clip from anything. And I truly love your UI. It has everything, yet is clean and concise.

I’m so glad that everyone is enjoying and getting use out of the post!@ Kyomasa – I’m not sure whether or not you can import your own sound files. And I’m not sure if “You. Will. DIE” is from the game or not. It sounds similar to Gruul’s voice, but not quite. Hmmm… maybe something from Vanilla WoW I didn’t get to see? (Vanilla raiders, can you verify that?)

[…] Should I get that desire to play back (and get that stupid achievement over with), expect to see a very Grimtorn UI, based of Anea’s post. […]

“Even though you can only see two bars, I am utilizing several full bars with keybinds.”I’m trying to set up a minimalist UI myself, but it’s this part I am stumbling on. I have no idea how I should set up key binds to be… well, efficient. I would hate to think I need to press 3 different keys to cast a spell, and if I don’t hit them in the right order, whoops, wiped the raid!Probably doesn’t help that I got myself a gaming keyboard, where it’s mostly set up ideally for FPS, and not MMOs. I feel that in order for me to hit one of the modifier keys I need a 6th finger.

@ Kalatash – initially I had this same problem too. I was used to seeing my buttons and using 1 through = to push them. But then I started noticing other buttons on my keyboard – my number pad, for example (if you have one.) That gives you 15 buttons to use (I discount the “enter” since I actually like to keep it for it’s original function.) There is an alt+# combo option, which I used to utilize for heals before Healbot. There are ALL the other keys on the board besides wasdpc (whatever other ones you’re used to) The only issue is whether or not you can get to them quickly. Once you learn where everything is, you’ll hardly need to look down to get the right spells. (I made a cheatsheet just in case, for the first few weeks, I will admit.)Gaming keyboards though… no idea, can’t help you there, haha.

@ Anea – The keyboard I got is <a href="http://www.wolfkingusa.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=10&Itemid=10“ rel=”nofollow”>this one:So no numberpad for me right now, which can get annoying. The one thing I really wish for is a modifier key near my thumb. And the other thing is I have no idea which healing spells I should hotkey, and which I should forget. And which… other spells I should use as well. I currently have most every single spell that has +healing in consideration, and I’m trying to figure out which one’s I’m actually supposed to be casting mostly. >.o

@ Kalatash – wow, that’s quite the keyboard. That would certainly take some getting used to!As far as which heals to bind, think about which heals you ALWAYS use. For example, I always always use Prayer of Mending, Flash Heal, Greater Heal & Renew. Those are all the time, for any instance or raid. They get bound first, in the best spots, for ease of pressing (or, bound to the easiest keys on my mouse.) Then I work further down the line – Desperate Prayer. Not an all the time spell, but it’s something that I use in an emergency, so I place that somewhere convenient and not too hard to get. For a silly example of what you probably won’t want to give priority to, but is still a healing spell (technically) is Lifeblood. Just make sure you work down the line of most used to least – and if you can honestly say that you never use it, haven’t used it in the last several raids… leave it out.

I keep on forgetting to use Prayer of Mending… mostly in the fights where it only seems to bounce ONCE, then mocks me from where it sits. And there is the fact that I am deep Disc, so I would need to make sure I have Penance and PW:S ready as well. I have recently specced into Desperate Prayer, have yet to use it. …not sure if I have ever used Pain Suppression, Power Infusion, or Inner Fire, either….when in the hell should I use Inner Fire, anyway? I know it used to keep you out of the 5sR, but I think they are changing that? Or already changed it. So maybe I shoudl just use it early, and often. No idea what Lifeblood is. …though I do miss my Shadowguard. :(

I just love your UI, the clean, crisp and functional approach is just overwhelming! And I just switched from my own setup to Spartan to have less clutter on the screen and I now know I have to move on to this one… or similar, in any case….yea, it’s UI envy at it’s best… or worst…Copra
